Space 109 Community Arts Centre in Walmgate, within the York's city walls.
We host many cultural and community events, along with providing space for exhibitions, parties, music and drama. If you have a new idea, come and talk to us.
We are the community “hub” where people can relax in a large homely setting and have some ownership of the space, giving an underprivileged community opportunities that are rarely found on a council estate. Resident’s portraits hang on the walls alongside work from artists and local children. The kitchen is fully equipped and well used, churning out soup and chilli for community meetings and events.
We offer a large studio for messy art activities, and a media room for quiet study, IT and homework.Regular activities are: Yum Yum cooking and homework club for over 8's, Dan’s Singing group, Parent Rescue, Arty time, Kids Art Night, Stitchers in Space, Home crafts, Life Drawing, Acoustic music events, Cafe’s, Portrait Sculpting, Poetry nights, Art Exhibitions and more...see our events pages for details.
We are always ready to hear new ideas and encourage ‘first timers’ to try their hand at putting on their own activities. This can range from students organising events, young musicians trying their hand at playing live, charity cafe’s, art club exhibitions. For such people our charge is minimal, making Space 109 affordable for all.
Space 109 is funded through event fees, room hire and grants.
